Four ways we work — from the first sketch on a kitchen table to the quiet sweep of leaves in November.

What we tend to

Garden design

Full design from survey to planting plan. We read the light, the soil and the way you actually live outside, then draw a garden that fits all three.

from £1,400

Planting schemes

Layered, seasonal planting that peaks at different times of year — perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees chosen to thrive on your patch, not fight it.

from £900

Patios & decking

Stone terraces, reclaimed brick paths, oak decking and timber screens — hard landscaping built to last decades and weather beautifully.

Maintenance & care

Seasonal visits to prune, mulch, feed and edit. A garden is never finished — we keep yours looking intentional all year round.

Our story

Hands in the soil since 2008.

Greenhand began with one wheelbarrow, a battered set of secateurs and a stretch of clay field outside Chew Magna. We never wanted to be the biggest landscaping firm in the West Country — only the most patient.

We design slowly, plant honestly, and build with materials that age well. Most of our work comes from neighbours who saw what we did next door. That's the way we like it.

Every garden we make is meant to outlive the install: better in year three than year one, and better still in year ten.

What we do through the seasons

01

Spring

Sowing, soil prep and the big new planting. We get roots in while the ground is warm and wet — this is when whole gardens are born.

02

Summer

Watering, staking and editing. We keep beds at their peak, tie in climbers, and trim hedges into crisp lines before the heat builds.

03

Autumn

The best month to plant trees and divide perennials. Leaves down, mulch on, bulbs in for next year's first colour.

04

Winter

Hard landscaping season — patios, paths and structure laid while plants sleep. Pruning, planning and drawing next year's gardens.

How a garden gets made

From first walk to last leaf

1

The walk & listen

We meet on site, walk the ground together and talk about how you want to use it. No clipboards — just questions, light readings and a soil test.

2

The design

You receive a hand-drawn plan, a planting palette and a clear, honest quote. We refine it together until it feels exactly right.

3

The build

Our small team lays the bones — paths, terraces, beds and screens — working tidily and finishing each stage before moving on.

4

The planting & care

We plant in layers and hand the garden over with a seasonal care plan. Then we come back, prune, feed and watch it grow into itself.

Most of our gardens come from a recommendation over a garden fence.

Kind words from neighbours

Before you get in touch

What areas do you cover?
We work across the Chew Valley, North Somerset and greater Bristol — roughly a 25-mile radius of Chew Magna. For larger design-only projects we'll happily travel a little further; just ask.
How much does a garden design cost?
A full design typically starts around £1,400 depending on the size and complexity of the plot. We always send a clear, itemised quote before any work begins — no surprises, no hidden call-out fees.
Do you do the building too, or just the design?
Both. We can hand you a plan to take to your own contractor, or design and build the whole thing ourselves with our own team — which is how most of our clients prefer to work.
When is the best time to start?
Honestly, almost any time. We design through winter, build hard landscaping in the colder months and plant in spring and autumn. The sooner we start the planning, the sooner your garden can begin growing in.
Will you look after the garden afterwards?
Yes — and we'd love to. We offer seasonal maintenance visits from £55 to keep everything pruned, fed and looking intentional. A garden we built, cared for by the people who know it best.

Let's grow something together.

Tell us about your patch — big or small, blank canvas or tired tangle. We'll come for a walk and a chat.
